Rekeying changes the internal pins of a lock so old keys no longer work - without replacing the hardware itself. It’s faster and far cheaper than buying new locks, and in most homes it’s exactly the right call. Here’s how to know when it’s time.
1. You just moved into a new home
You have no idea how many copies of your keys are floating around - previous owners, contractors, neighbors, real-estate agents. Rekeying on day one gives you a clean slate and full control over who can get in.
2. You lost a key (or a set)
A lost key is a security question mark. If you can’t be certain where it ended up, assume the worst and rekey. It’s a small cost for the peace of mind of knowing that key no longer opens your door.
3. A roommate or tenant moved out
Even on good terms, keys have a way of being copied or forgotten. When someone with access leaves, rekeying ensures the transition is clean and your home stays yours.
4. You have too many different keys
If your front, back, and garage doors all take separate keys, a locksmith can rekey them to a single key. One key, every door - simpler and no loss of security.
5. After a break-in or attempted entry
If your locks were tampered with but aren’t damaged, rekeying restores security quickly. If the hardware was forced or broken, replacement is the safer choice - and we’ll tell you which you need.
